Happy Thursday, Kαλημέρα!
You’ve probably noticed every week a picture at the beginning of every newsletter. Some weeks it may be a random picture we find interesting, and other weeks it may be a picture directly related to a specific topic of the newsletter.
This week we chose a picture of Crete. Besides being a beautiful island of Greece, the people of Crete are well known for preserving and passing on traditions, culture, music, and much more.
And to top things off, we added a music video from Πάολα called “Έμαθα Να Μαθαίνω” in our Greek music section for those who like the sound of the Lyra. We hope you enjoy it!
Greek Culture
Living in Canada, you can easily forget certain Greek holidays and traditions, but it is through traditions that we transmit our Greek culture to future generations, and August 27th (tomorrow, that is) allows us to do precisely that with the commemoration of Saint Phanourios.
Saint Phanourios
On August 27th, we commemorate Saint Phanourios, best known for helping the faithful find lost items. His name derives from the word φανερώνω (I reveal).
Phanouropita Tradition
On the eve of the feast of St. Phanourios (and any time a lost item is revealed to you after asking him for his help), it is customary to bake a Phanouropita cake (using 7 or 9 ingredients) and take it to church to be blessed. This cake is actually baked in honour of his mother. You can read more about St Phanourios and why we bake a Phanouropita here.
