Kαλό μήνα!
If you’re reading this email, there is a pretty good chance you are of Greek background living in Canada. While we sometimes like to complain about the weather here (lol), Canada has been home to us for many years. Happy 154th birthday, Canada!
Higher-order Thinking and the Ancient Greeks
Want to improve your cognition and brain function? Read, read, read! Not only does reading delay the onset of dementia, but it raises your IQ and even improves your overall mental health.
Did you know that reading and writing originated from the Ancient Greeks during the 5th century? The Greeks were the first ancient civilization to invent a set of symbols that represented the sounds in their language. The first Greek alphabet actually consisted of 30 symbols instead of 24.
Words of Wisdom
“We should face everything with good thoughts. Being tranquil in the midst of a great disturbance is a great achievement.” Saint Paisios
Local + Greek
There’s been some disappointment in the media recently regarding the cancellation of many Canada Day celebrations this year. If you’d like to celebrate Canada’s 154th birthday the “Greek” way, head over to the Greek Market Cafe today, located at 60 King Rd. in Richmond Hill (just north of Yonge & Stouffville Rd.) They will be hosting their fireworks celebration at 10 pm. They have a beautiful patio, great food (e.g. souvlakia, gyros, burgers, desserts), and lots of parking is available too!
Step 2 Reopening
June 30th marked the Step 2 reopening in Ontario. Below are the new capacity limits for some of our churches:
- St. Demetrios: 250
- St. John’s: 110
- St. Irene’s: 120
- Virgin Mary Church: 280
- Metamorphosis: 125
- All Saints: 38
Greek Music
Anna Vissi, in this newly released video, performs a romantic duet with Babis Stokas (founding member of Pyx Lax), titled: “Κι Όμως Δεν Τελειώνει”. Filmed on the island of Hydra, along with beautiful lyrics and captivating scenery.
