Kαλημέρα Τορόντο
A lot is happening this month, a big announcement yesterday on a new vaccine passport, plus an election creeping up on the 20th. Add to that, some people going back to the office, plus the beginning of a new school year next week. September is looking pretty busy.
Happy Orthodox New Year
No, this is not a mistake. Many may not know this, but being Greek, you get to have a fresh start to the year two times a year, yes, two times.
So if you are looking for a fresh start, this is a perfect month for just that as it is the beginning of the Orthodox ecclesiastical year.
Ecclesiastical New Year
September 1st was declared the start of the ecclesiastical year at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 A.D. It had been historically a month to gather and store crops and offer thanks to God. The Church prays for favourable weather and an abundance of the fruits of the earth. Here are some ideas and traditions on how to celebrate the new year:
- Place an icon outside your home on the eve of the new year (I guess you could save this idea for next year)
- Clean your icon corner
- Pray for your family
